BOUNTIFUL – Breck England is seeking the state school board seat, District 5, that represents Davis County south of Layton into Rose Park.

“Utah’s schools are right on top of the curve – the mediocrity curve. that is,” said the Bountiful resident.

“We can lead the nation in educational performance,” England said. “We have great kids. We have great teachers. What we don’t have are solid education goals and the will to educate. I want to fix that.”

England is senior product developer for FranklinCovey Co. He has a Ph.D. in English pedagogy from the University of Utah and taught at Bountiful High School for 10 years. He was director of consulting for Shipley Associates, a consulting firm that merged with FranklinCovey.

England also taught communication skills to MBA students at Brigham Young University’s Marriott School of Business.

“I’m the only candidate who knows the inner workings of public schools, colleges and private business,” he said. “I’ve managed both a classroom and a business. I know how to achieve goals.”

He said that as a businessman, if he turned  in “the kind of mediocre results our schools are getting year after year, I would have been terminated long ago.”

England has developed curriculums offered to thousands of students in 143 countries and personally taught thousands.

He coauthored several books with the late Stephen R. Covey.

England and his wife Valerie have five children and 12 grandchildren.

“All of my children, my wife, and I are products of Bountiful High School. We love our public schools and want to see them succeed.”

He said Utah children are being “shortchanged” by “jamming them into the largest classrooms with the most overworked teachers in America. It’s time to re-think how we allocate resources so we can achieve our most important goal – unleashing the potential of our children.”
