FRUIT HEIGHTS – Emily Curtis thinks her five-year-old beagle, Annie, is perfect.
Employees of the Davis County Animal Care & Control thought Emily’s essay about Annie was a winner, and presented the Woods Cross sixth grader a certificate of achievement and a $100 gift card to PetSmart last week.
The county department held an essay contest in November, inviting all elementary school students to write in 100 words or less why they are thankful for their pets, according to a press release. Emily’s was one of 62 received and was voted the favorite by employees.
“Emily’s essay pulled a lot of heart strings of our staff,” said Clint Thacker, director of Davis County Animal Care & Control. “Emily understands unconditional love that pets can give us. I have seen some of the horrible things people can do to animals, but the animals still love us. Emily’s essay was a great reminder to all of us how much we love our pets.”
Emily’s winning entry follows:
“I am thankful for my pet because she is like my sister. She is there for me when I am sick and when I just need someone to talk to. When I saw this contest, I thought it was my chance to give back to her. I think she is perfect because she will always love me; whether I am fat, skinny, pretty, ugly, sick, well, sad or happy. She is so much more than I could ask for. When I see her I just want to run to her like they do in the movies, but I know I can’t.”
Thacker and Officer Jaime Stell presented Emily with the certificate and gift card in her classroom at Woods Cross Elementary on Dec. 5.
“The contest is a great way for all of the children who have pets to express their thankfulness,” said Thacker. “Our staff gets the extra benefit of reading these incredible stories of love.”
