KAYSVILLE – It’s a great way to be involved in scientific research: taste raspberries.
Those who visited USU Botanical Center’s Farmers’ Market on its opening day last Thursday got a chance to contribute to science by tasting raspberries. They could then vote by putting pennies in a piggy bank near their favorite strains.
Shawn Olsen, a professor at USU’s Davis County extension, and Britney Hunter, an assistant professor, recently published a paper comparing 10 raspberry plants. The study included results of similar surveys at past farmers’ markets.
Taste preference is just one aspect to consider when analyzing berries, according to Olsen. The researchers also looked at yield, winter heartiness and insect susceptibility.
Olsen was also involved in producing “A Guide to Common Gardening Questions,” published by the extension. The spiral-bound manual covers everything from garden preparation and maintenance, to nutritional benefits of garden produce, and is available through email@example.com.
Successful gardeners were sprinkled around the Farmers’ Market at the botanicalcenter, offering beets, garlic, basil and more.
Other vendors shared crafts or cooling refreshments on the hot afternoon.
One popular treat was Aggie ice cream, offered in multiple flavors.
The market continues on Thursdays throughout the harvest season, ending Oct. 3. It runs from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Utah Botanical Center, 875 S. 50 West in Kaysville.
