FARMINGTON – City Council member Nelson Michaelson has submitted his letter of resignation to the council and mayor, citing a job relocation as reason for his departure.
The public notice will be posted until December 10, 2012. Anyone interested in filling the vacancy must file a declaration of candidacy with the city, which requires that the candidate has lived with Farmington City for at least 12 months.
Candidates must also be over the age of 18, and not be convicted felons.
As part of the submission process, each candidate must submit a written letter to the council describing their desire to fill the vacant council seat.
Each candidate will have the opportunity to speak before the council in an open meeting. In that meeting, they will be asked about their qualifications as well as their desire to serve. Due to recent legislation, the sitting council is prohibited from discussing their conclusions in a closed meeting. A public vote is required.
The council is expected to make a decision during its Dec. 18 meeting. The individual who is appointed by the council at that meeting will be sworn in during the first city council meeting in January of 2014.
