BOUNTIFUL — Kids typically flock to the Firefighter Challenge during South Davis Metro Fire Agency’s open houses and South Davis Metro Fire Agency Deputy Chief Jeff Bassett expects this year will be no different.
The agency has set four open houses, one at each of the four fire houses, between Oct. 15 and 18. The open houses are held in conjunction with Fire Prevention Month.
“We’re a little late this year,” Bassett said. Fire Prevention Week is typically the first week of October, but because the entire month is Fire Prevention Month, activities are still timely. Theme of the week is “Two Ways Out,” emphasizing people should always have two ways out of a building in case of fire or other disaster.
The Firefighter Challenge is an obstacle course kids can go through which is a fun way to teach fire safety. “It’s typically the favorite activity of kids,” Bassett said.
Many of the week’s activities are geared towards kids. “We try to get the kids into it,” Bassett said. Those activities include face painting and kids’ tattoos, cookie decorating, the challenge and the Fire Prevention Smoke Trailer.
The trailer is filled with smoke as though there is a fire burning in it. Kids have to crawl their way out. This year, they plan on using the trailer to emphasize the messsage of having multiple ways out of a building.
“It doesn’t have to be two doors, it can be a door or a window, but everyone should be aware of two ways to get our of a building,” Bassett said.
Adults can also find helpful information on fire safety. There will be fire prevention handouts available.
Bassett said from year to year, firefighters never know what the response to the open houses will be. This year, it looks like the turnout may be good because the agency has had a lot of inquiries on its Facebook page.
