BOUNTIFUL — The South Davis Recreation Center and fitness go hand and glove.
Anyone wanting to get more fit, no matter what their age or fitness level, can find an option that works for them, said Mellissa Laurel, the center’s fitness and wellness coordinator.
“We have 74 classes, one that should work for any schedule,” she said.
The center is open weekdays 5 a.m. to 9 p.m., Saturdays from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sundays 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Organized classes start every weekday by 5:15: there’s power tone on Mondays and Wednesdays, yoga on Tuesdays, Zumba on Thursdays and turbo kick on Fridays. That’s not to mention cycling classes every weekday starting at the same time.
The 9 p.m. Zumba class is very popular, Laurel says, especially for mothers who often come after their children are tucked into bed.
“Zumba is our biggest class category. Our conditioning classes do very well,” she says.
There are classes designed for every fitness level. For instance, the Silver Sneakers for those over age 62 “is doing awesome,” Laurel says.
Fitness goals can go beyond structured classes, ranging from pumping iron in the weight room to racquetball, running or walking the indoor track, swimming, or ice skating.
“We try to reach out and make sure our classes and programs are affordable,” Laurel emphasizes.
Single use admission for fitness and swimming is $5 adults, $3.50 for seniors aged 60 and over and students ages 12-17, and $3 for those ages 4-11. Ice arena prices are the same as above and $1.50 for skate rental.
Annual memberships for South Davis residents range from $450 for a family, $375 for a couple, $300 for a single couple, $275 for a senior couple, $225 a single senior and students, and $175 for youth.
Monthly rates are also available.
The center is financially supported by the cities of Bountiful, Centerville, North Salt Lake, West Bountiful and Woods Cross.
Rates are higher for non-residents.
“This facility really has the right recipe for success. There’s a fun, exciting atmosphere that makes people want to come back,” Laurel says.
She has worked at the facility for six years, as have most of the fitness instructors.
“Fitness makes a person feel good. If you’re fit, you can be a better mom or dad, a better boss, whatever the case may be,” she says.
The South Davis Recreation Center is situated on the west end of Bountiful City Park at 550 N. 200 West. For more information visit southdavisrecreation.com or call 801-298-6220.
