This year, Foxboro Elementary will join four other Davis County schools in operating on a year-round calendar as a way to manage a large student population.
The change was necessary, according to Kevin Prusse, Foxboro’s principal, because there are about 1,000 students in a school built for fewer than 700.
Three-quarters of the student population will begin school on July 25, along with students at Antelope Elementary in Clearfield, Bluff Ridge and Syracuse elementaries in Syracuse, and Lincoln Elementary in Layton.
“It makes better use of the buildings so they aren’t so crowded,” said Prusse.
There will be 10 kindergarten classes at Foxboro this year. In addition, there are enough students for seven classes of first graders and another seven of second graders. Both third and fourth-grades will have five classes. Four fifth-grade classes and three sixth-grade classes are also filled.
When Foxboro first opened just four years ago there were four empty classrooms, according to Prusse. The second year it was full, and the third year it needed four portable classrooms. This year there will be six portables and the year-round schedule.
