Depending on the day it is still cold outside and all I can think about is sitting under a palm tree with a gentle refreshing breeze blowing in from the beautiful blue ocean. If I get too hot I will take a quick swim in the waves as they break in perfect curls. In the evenings I will take my wife for a stroll along the beach with our toes digging in the soft sand. Every once in a while a wave will come in too far and splash over our ankles. I want to go back to Hawaii!

Although I have been to Hawaii six times I will never get tired of the tropical paradise that makes up our 50th state. I am the kind of person that watches the new Hawaii 5-0 show to look at the scenery and beaches, I watch old Magnum P.I. shows for that reason too. Don’t tell my wife but I think I will start planning a trip to Hawaii, I hope she likes surprises.

I am often asked when the best time is, my response is that it is always a great time to go to Hawaii. Personally I like to go in October or November when the crowds are small the weather is great and the beaches are empty—except on the weekends. Airfares and hotel rates are usually lower also.

Honolulu is on the island of Oahu and there is so much to do on that island. Some people think that Waikiki is too crowded, fine go out to the North Shore and see the quiet side of Oahu with quiet beaches and amazing scenery. On your way make sure to stop at the Dole Pineapple Plantation, I always buy a fresh spear of pineapple dipped in chocolate. On the North Shore you will also find the incredible Polynesian Cultural Center with its interesting cultural demonstrations and the fantastic evening show.

There are good places to snorkel on Oahu but probably the best is Hanauma Bay where the water is calm and the colorful fish are plentiful. Go early in the day because the number of visitors is limited.

Back in Honolulu enjoy the striking sunsets from Waikiki Beach, shop at the fun International Market Place, eat at fabulous restaurants and enjoy the crystal clear water. Don’t rent a car if you are staying in Waikiki, it costs a fortune to park it. To see the rest of the island rent the car just for a day or two. If you want to bring back souvenirs don’t miss the Swap Meet at Aloha Stadium, the prices are great!

While in Honolulu make sure to go to the Arizona Memorial, a tear comes to my eyes every time I go. You will be immediately connected the brave soldiers that gave so much during World War II to protect the freedom we enjoy today. Enjoy your trip to Hawaii; it won’t be long until you are planning another one!

Travel Tip: If you already have a place to stay in Hawaii, a lot of times it is less expensive to buy a package including air and car than if you buy it separate.
