FARMINGTON — The man accused of killing his mother and stuffing her body in a freezer in 2006 is going to trial on Dec. 19.

The date for a three-day bench trial for Jeremy Jacob Hauck, 24, was set during a hearing on Monday in 2nd District Court. That hearing was set to further evaluate Hauck’s mental state at the time his mother died.

Hauck’s attorney Todd Utzinger plans to use an insanity defense, and at Monday’s hearing asked Judge John Morris to look at whether his client is guilty or not guilty by reason of insanity. If the judge determines he is insane, then the judge will be asked to determine whether Hauck is a danger to himself or society and should be housed at the Utah State Hospital for the rest of his life.

In November 2010, Morris signed an order for Hauck to be forcibly medicated.

In February 2012, medical experts agreed Hauck was competent to stand trial.

He has been at the state hospital for several years.

Hauck is charged with first-degree murder, accused of killing his mother Laura Hauck, in August 2006. Her body was found in the Bountiful condominium the two shared after police received a call from her sister requesting that they check on her.

Police found Laura Hauck’s body in a freezer in the basement. She had been shot twice and her throat had been slit.

Jeremy Hauck was found days later in Montana.

Hauck has been diagnosed with a schizophrenic disorder, autism and a delusional disorder.
