FARMINGTON — A three-day preliminary hearing has been set to begin March 27 for Nathanael Sloop, the man charged with first-degree murder for allegedly killing his stepson, Ethan, in 2010.
Sloop was in 2nd District Court on Monday for an evidentiary hearing prior to the preliminary hearing.
Sloop, 34, of Layton, and his wife Stephanie Sloop, the boy’s mother, are charged with aggravated murder, second-degree felony child abuse, second-degree obstruction of justice and third-degree felony abuse or desecration of a body. The crimes are alleged in relation to the death of four-year-old Ethan Stacy in May of 2010.
The couple reported Ethan missing on May 10. His body was found on May 11 near Powder Mountain.
He had come to Utah to spend the summer with his mother.
Charging documents allege that the couple left Ethan alone when they went to get married. They also allegedly beat the child and refused to get him medical attention for his injuries.
Nathanael Sloop also allegedly disfigured the dead boy’s face to hide his identity.
The preliminary hearing will decide whether Nathanael Sloop will go to trial.
