SALT LAKE CITY – Jakob Hunt rushed for 136 yards on 31 carries with three touchdowns, including the game winning touchdown in overtime, to help lift the Braves over the Highland Rams 30-27 Friday night.

“This was one of those games where you knew it was going to be physical all game,” said Bountiful coach Larry Wall. “We knew it wasn’t going to be a shutout and we knew they were going to try and take away our run game, but Jakob had a pretty big night.”

Hunt’s first touchdown came on Bountiful’s third drive of the night, scampering in from 22 yards out to tie the game at 7-7. Bountiful’s drive started on their 21 and lasted seven plays. Two key penalties from Highland helped the Braves reach the Highland 38 yard line, and three plays later the score was tied.

After allowing a field goal to trail 10-7, Bountiful went 80 yards on its next drive to take a three-point lead with four minutes remaining in the half. The drive went 14 plays and was capped off by Hunts’ second touchdown of the night, a two-yard run to make the score 13-10.

Highland re-took the lead at 17-13 after scoring a second rushing touchdown just before the first half ended.

With Hunt able to control things in the back field, Jordan Hayes was passing efficiently throughout the night. On Bountiful’s game-tying drive, Hayes completed both his passes for 13 yards, including a touchdown pass to Tanner Redding that made the score 24-22. On the two-point try, Hayes found an open Ryan Curtis to tie the game at 24.

“Hayes was dynamite at quarterback,” said Wall. “Their game plan was to take away our run, so we had to throw it. Our receivers had a great night as well. Redding had a great game and Sam Merrill came through in clutch situations.”

In overtime, Bountiful’s defense held the Rams to a 37-yard field goal by Highland kicker Mike Kerr. On Bountiful’s possession, they faced a third-and-long situation after seeing Hayes sacked for a five-yard loss. On the next play, Hayes found Merrill for a 28-yard reception that put the ball on the one yard line.

On the next play, Hunt scored the game-winning touchdown.

“That’s as good a high school football game as it’s going to get,” said Wall. “There were two good teams here that battled until the end, and we were fortunate to get the win.”

GAME NOTES: Hayes finished the night completing 14-of-24 passing attempts for 132 yards and touchdown without an interception. Hunt’s three touchdowns brought his season total up to 18 for the season. Redding’s touchdown reception was his only catch of the game, and Merrill caught eight balls for 80 yards, including the game-tying two point catch. Bountiful’s next game will be at home against the Clearfield Falcons.
