All voting to go through mail in 2013 election

SYRACUSE — The only way to vote in Syracuse this fall will be through the mail, the city council decided last week.
The change, a first for Davis County, was made in hopes of getting the vote out for the Nov. 5 municipal election.
“That’s really the main reason we wanted to partner with the county to pursue this,” said City Recorder Cassie Brown.
She said not one election in Washington and Oregon has resulted in a turnout of less than 48 percent since statewide all-mail elections were started in those states.
“We’re hoping to at least get double the turnout” of the previous municipal election in 2011 when three council seats were on the ballot, Brown said.
That year, Syracuse turnout was 22 percent. There are 13,324 registered voters in the city, she said.
