LAS VEGAS, NV — Centerville resident Ben Kjar has a new title to add to his list of wrestling accomplishments: Freestyle All-American.

The Utah Valley grappler earned 5th place at the 2009 US Freestyle Nationals in Las Vegas.

“It was a great tournament for Ben,” said UVU wrestling coach Greg Williams. “He took on some very tough competition and was able to learn from his mistakes and get stronger as the day went on.”

Kjar defeated two NCAA All-Americans en route to his 5th place finish.

In the match for 5th place, Kjar beat Ben Ashmore of Arizona State, 2-1 (01, 2-1, 5-2).

Freestyle wrestling scores differently than folkstyle or college wrestling. In free style, the match is decided much like tennis where the winner has to defeat his opponent in a best-of-three situation. The 5th place finish also qualified Kjar for 2009 Wrestling World Team Trials, which will take place in Council Bluffs, Iowa on May 30-31.

“I am excited about the opportunity to wrestle in the USA Men’s World Team Trials,” Kjar said. “The top three from that tournament will wrestle internationally for the USA team.”

Kjar is the son of Scott and Stana Kjar.
