WOODS CROSS – The end of the week was good for most of the south Davis County high schools.
Two of the three local teams picked up wins toward the end of the week.
Davis notched its third win in a row last Wednesday after knocking off Copper Hills 61-40, and Bountiful rebounded off a tough loss to Layton by winning its game Friday over Olympus 60-39.
Viewmont, however, wasn’t as fortunate as Davis and Bountiful. The Lady Vikings lost to Riverton 52-43 in overtime.
Riding a two-game winning streak thanks to their win over Woods Cross last Tuesday, the Davis Lady Darts hosted Copper Hills Wednesday night.
The Grizzlies were met with a solid Darts defense. Davis held Copper Hills to 16 first-half points on its way to a 21-point victory.
The tandem of Jessica Richardson, Natalie Mecham and Morgan Hartvigsen led the scoring charge for Davis, with Richardson scoring 18 points with 12 rebounds. Mecham scored 17 points and also had 12 rebounds, and Hartvigsen scored 15 points with three 3-pointers.
Copper Hills only had one double-digit scorer in the game, Savannah Sandberg. She finished with 14 points and five rebounds in the loss.
Davis held an opponent to fewer than 50 points for the seventh time in nine games. The Darts are 5-2 in that span.
Bountiful’s Friday night win over Olympus came after the Braves were held to fewer than 40 points in a game for the first time all season.
The team rebounded off a poor scoring performance by scoring 60 points for the third time this season, leading to a 60-39 win over the Titans.
Kennedy Merrick was on fire from start to finish, knocking down 27 points to lead the team. With no other players scoring in double figures, Tiana Dougher and Jordyn Turville combined to score 12 points, and Jenny Skedros scored seven points in the Braves’ fifth win of the season.
Bountiful held an opponent to fewer than 40 points for just the second time during preseason play, winning both games. Among Region 6 teams, the Braves are first in points scored, but rank fourth in points allowed.
After Viewmont bounced back from its first loss of the season that included a hard-fought overtime victory over Sky View, the Vikings were faced with playing another overtime game against Riverton last Thursday.
The Silverwolves outscored the Vikings 12-3 in the overtime period.
Even though the Vikings led through the first quarter, Viewmont had to fight to get back to even ground after allowing 18 second-quarter points by the half.
Caitlyn Larsen and Katie Toole, the team’s top two scorers, led the charge in the third and fourth quarters in order to force the overtime period. They fell short to Shelby Richards, Gerika Ballard and the rest of the Riverton squad.
Larsen led all scorers with 18 points in the loss, and Toole had 16 points for Viewmont.
Riverton’s Richards scored 13 points, and Ballard and Mallory Bostic each scored nine.
Bountiful and Viewmont will play each other in a cross-town rivalry game Saturday at Viewmont High School. Davis will be at home to host the Brighton Bengals on Saturday as well.
Woods Cross will not play another game until after the New Year’s holiday.
