TAYLORSVILLE – The state 4A and 5A girls’ basketball tournament got underway last week, and only Davis and Bountiful high schools made it past the opening rounds.
On Wednesday, the Lady Braves were the first to be eliminated from title contention after giving up a big lead to Timpanogos, leading to a 60-54 loss.
In Thursday’s 5A quarterfinal, Davis lost to the Brighton Bulldogs, 61-41.
Viewmont and Woods Cross each were eliminated in the opening round by Riverton and Timpview, respectively.
Braves give up huge lead, lose to Timpanogos 60-54
The Lady Braves were making every shot imaginable in the first quarter of their 4A playoff game against Timpanogos last Wednesday.
A 22-9 first quarter lead wasn’t enough; however, as the Timberwolves methodically took over the lead in the fourth quarter and eliminated Bountiful from the playoffs with a 60-54 win.
Timpanogos outscored Bountiful 29-14 in the second and third quarters and held the lead at 37-36 entering the fourth quarter.
Bountiful took the lead briefly in the fourth quarter, but Timpanogos went on a scoring run that gave it the lead for good.
Tiana Dougher led Bountiful with 19 points and six rebounds, and Kennedy Redding scored 12 points and pulled down 16 rebounds in the loss.
Eternity Galaei led all scorers with 25 points and had seven rebounds in the win.
Brighton knocks Davis out of the playoffs with 61-41 win
From the opening tip-off to the final buzzer, the Brighton Bengals were able to dominate the Davis Darts in the 5A state quarterfinals last Thursday.
Brighton outscored Davis in all four quarters and held the Lady Darts to under 40 percent shooting from the floor, giving the Bengals the win, 61-41.
Maddie Chin and Dani Barton gave the Lady Darts defense fits on the floor. The duo combined to score 31 points, and the Bengals as a whole had four players score in double figures.
Davis’s top scorer was Sarah Beecher, who finished with 16 points in the loss.
Meaghan David scored seven points for Davis.
Lady Vikings, Wildcats eliminated in the opening round
It was a rough state tournament for both the Viewmont Vikings and Woods Cross Wildcats girls’ basketball teams.
Woods Cross was eliminated by Timpview in Monday’s opening round, 59-35.
In the loss, Aubree Riddle scored 13 points for the Wildcats. Halle Smith finished with nine points and Haylee McKenna scored seven points.
The Vikings also were a first-round exit after losing their game to Riverton, 60-52.
Katie Toole scored a team-high 18 points for the Lady Vikings. Caitlyn Larsen scored 17 points in the loss.
