CENTERVILLE – The Viewmont Lady Vikings girls’ soccer team wasted little time getting on the scoreboard against the Lehi Pioneers to open the 5A state playoffs Tuesday.
Once they scored, the shots seemingly kept going in for the Vikings, who put up five goals in a 5-0 win.
Viewmont’s first goal occurred in the fourth minute of play when Jessica James took a great pass from Sara Harper and knocked the ball to the back of the net for the 1-0 lead.
In the 22nd minute, Abbie Flandro changed the score to 2-0 after taking a shot from about 30 yards out. Lehi goal keeper Kirstin Josie just missed saving the ball, and the half was over before Viewmont could score any more.
The Vikings’ lead could have been 3-0, but a long set piece hit the cross bar before the half ended.
Viewmont wasted little time in the second half getting on the board again as Karrie Pead kicked in the first of her two goals in the afternoon, giving the Vikings a three-goal lead.
On the goal, Pead and Josie collided trying to converge on the ball. Pead got the initial hit on the ball, and the two collided inside the scoring area. Pead’s shot ended up going over Josie, rolling forward until it crossed the goal line.
Pead’s second goal came about 10 minutes later when she finished off a set piece with a header for a 4-0 Vikings lead. The Vikings’ final goal came in the 68th minute.
Haley Johnson earned the shutout at the net.
The Lady Vikings will face Hillcrest, which beat Bingham 1-0, on Thursday at Hillcrest High School. Kickoff is 4 email@example.com
