LAYTON --  A fire that damaged the roof of a Layton Hardware store early Thursday morning isn’t stopping the business from opening.

Despite the blaze, store opened as usual at 8 a.m.

Crews knocked down the fire at Ace Hardware store, 1330  E. State Route 193, in about 15 minutes, according to a press release from the Layton City Fire Department.

Flames were shooting as high as 6 feet into the air when crews arrived at 1:37 a.m., department spokesman Doug Bitton said in the release.

The fire was near the store’s heating and air conditioning system and was fueled by a natural gas line.

That line was shut off and firefighters deployed ladders and extended hoses to the roof. They fire had damaged  the roof’s seal layer around the unit and scorched the metal underdecking of the roof, the release said.

Water entered the building and some of the store’s contents were damaged. Fire crews assisted in removing the water.

Investigators are looking at the natural gas line as a possible cause of the fire, although the investigation hasn’t been completed.

Damage to the buildings and its contents are estimated at $50,000.
