Bountiful last standing from S. Davis

SALT LAKE CITY — It was an early exit for most of the South Davis County high school girls’ basketball teams.

Davis, Woods Cross, Viewmont and Bountiful were eliminated before the semifinal games last week.

Layton, the lone Davis County high school left standing on Saturday, came very close to winning a state title, only to fall to Riverton and finish in second place overall.

Layton loses lead, game to Riverton in 5A finals

Despite having to come back time and time again against Riverton last Saturday, the Layton Lancers girls’ basketball team eventually fell to Riverton 41-37 in the 5A title game, ending the season with a second-place finish.

Layton fell behind early as Riverton scored the first seven points in the game, but the Lady Lancers came back by the end of the first quarter and were only down four points.

The game went back and forth from that point on. Layton made a charge in the fourth quarter to take a small lead with roughly four minutes remaining in the game.

Riverton, however, went on a late scoring run, eventually putting away the Lancers by four points.

Layton finished the season with 17 wins, six in Region 1 play.

Davis ousted by eventual champions in quarters

The Davis Lady Darts had one of the best seasons in recent history, winning a Region 1 title and a No. 1 seed entering the 5A playoffs.

But after taking down West in the opening round, the Darts fell to eventual 5A champion Riverton 58-31.

Riverton’s offense took charge early and often in the game. They opened with a 20-point first quarter and 18 points in the second, all while holding Davis to 16 points.

For Davis, the deficit proved to be too much. The team managed to score 15 second half points, not enough to make a solid comeback.

Davis recorded 16 wins this season to go with its region title.

Fremont shocks Viewmont in overtime win

For the second time in three playoff appearances, the Lady Vikings girls’ basketball team was eliminated by Fremont, this time by a score of 46-45.

Fremont and Viewmont ended regulation tied at 37, and the Silver Wolves outscored the Vikings 9-8 in the overtime period.

Katie Toole led the Lady Vikings with 15 points. Viewmont finished the season with 19 wins and a 10-0 Region 2 mark.

Bountiful ousted in quarters after loss to Bobcats

The Bountiful Lady Braves had high hopes entering the 4A playoffs after posting a 15-win season and a Region 6 title.

However, after its opening round win over Herriman to start the playoffs, Bountiful was eliminated from the 4A playoffs with a 62-48 loss to former region foe Sky View.

Tiana Dougher and Kennedy Merrick led the Braves with 15 and 14 points, respectively, in the loss.
