WEST VALLEY CITY – Region 1 showed its power during the state 5A wrestling tournament at the Maverik Center last weekend.

Viewmont, which placed sixth last season, fell to ninth overall, and rival Davis rose to seventh.

Two more Davis County high schools, however, finished in the top five as the Layton Lancers and Syracuse Titans placed second and third, respectively, behind Pleasant Grove.

Though the scores show that Pleasant Grove won by a wide margin over Layton (269.5 for the Vikings, 163.5 for the Lancers), the margin between second and third place was closer.

Syracuse’s third place finish came with 141 points, 22.5 points ahead of fourth-place Jordan.

The Lancers had three grapplers reach the finals of their respective weight classes, and two of them won individual titles.

At 126 pounds, Andrew Astle defended his individual title from last year with an 8-4 decision over American Fork’s Jackson Wilson.

Two matches later, Oscar Rodriguez attempted to capture Layton’s second individual title in the 138 pound final against Alta’s Matt Findlay.

Findlay won via technical fall, 22-7.

In the 152 pound final, Colton Marshall won an individual title over West’s Zach Colangelo with a 4-3 decision.

Braxton Ocana (113 pounds), Landon Brown (195 pounds), and Trevor Pappas (220 pounds), each finished third for the Lancers.

Syracuse had four wrestlers reach the finals of their weight class, but only one walked off the mat as a state champion.

Teague Vigil went up against another county wrestler, Davis’ Jacob Naylor, in the 145-pound final, and eventually won the tightly-contested match 3-2.

Vigil finished the year with 44 wins overall, and earned the Titans their only individual title that day.

Brock George also reached the finals in the 113-pound bracket, but fell to Kyson Levin of Pleasant Grove in an 11-9 decision.

In the 170 pound final, Sean Marchant faced off against Pleasant Grove’s T.J. Wind, and also fell via decision, 9-5.

Aspen Naylor was the last finalist for Syracuse attempting to take home an individual title, but he also lost to Roy Nash of Taylorsville via technical fall, 21-6.

Nash’s win capped off an undefeated season for the wrestler.

Colton Berger was able to place third after beating Viewmont’s Ryan Winger in the 120-pound third place match.

At 106 pounds, Bryce Brimhall lost to Davis High’s Kade Evans in the third place match.

The match went into a tie-breaker, and Evans ended up winning 5-3.

Herriman rounded out the top five with a team score of 108.5.

Shain: Appreciate the Davis County coverage and mention of Syracuse and Layton programs. They both deserve mention as their teams did a great job at State. However, you missed mentioning Davis HS sophomore Wyatt Koelling who captured the 182 lb 5A title and Connor Taylor who also placed 6th as a sophomore at 195 lbs.

Apologies. You covered Davis HS in a separate article. Thank you.
