KAYSVILLE – The Lady Darts girls’ soccer team will have mix of ages this year as the team attempts to defend its sixth straight Region 1 crown.
Expectations are high, and Coach Souli Phongsavath and his coaching staff know that the leaders on this year’s team will serve an important role.
“We only have three seniors and one junior that will probably see some solid playing time,” he said. “But I think we have a good blend, a good mixture of players and a good amount of leadership.”
The leadership starts with the trio of seniors: Abbey Mann, Emma Farley and Sara Beecher. Each has been given her own responsibilities, and Phongsavath expects each to fulfill them daily.
“(Mann and Farley) are essentially making sure that the atmosphere remains positive in practice and in games,” he said. “Having (Beecher) back at goalkeeper with all of her experience is a great thing to have. She’s very confident back there.”
Madi Garlock also returns to the field for 2013. Garlock scored eight goals last season and will be another solid piece to the Lady Darts.
“She’s a great defender and she’s able to score,” Phongsavath said. “She’s a good track star and her work ethic is tireless. She’s one of those players that can play an entire game without having to come out for a breather.”
Ireland Dunn and Regan Youngberg are also expected to play bigger roles. Dunn scored seven goals as a forward in 2012, and Youngberg will combine with three other defenders that are expected to protect Beecher if needed.
Looking ahead to the new/old face of Region 1, Phongsavath said the re-addition of Viewmont to Region 1 has already made it more difficult. Wanting to beat them hasn’t changed.
“It’s Viewmont,” he said. “Whether we’ve played them once or twice, there’s a lot of pride involved when we go up against them.”
Davis was 15-2-1 in 2012, and was 8-1-1 in Region 1. They lost in the semi-finals to Viewmont.
