BOUNTIFUL – In its final season in Region 2, the Viewmont volleyball team had a success in its varsity and junior varsity ranks.

Heading into the playoffs with a 20-14 overall record last year, the varsity team lasted three games before being bounced from the playoffs.

The junior varsity team, however, was a different story. The Lady Vikings only lost one game, and Brooke Butler, entering her first year as head coach, is excited to see how that success will translate to the next level.

“They know how to win,” she said. “A lot of the girls from that team are seniors now and will help us be a strong Region 1 team.”

Returning to the team are six seniors who will see a significant amount of playing time on varsity.

Amanda Varley, for example, is expected to play as a right side hitter and most of the outside positions on the floor.

Her coach said she has a ton of power and is a very smart blocker, an asset the team will need as it heads back into Region 1.

Hanna Liferth, another senior, is expected to do big things as a libero (defensive specialist) and will mostly play on the back line.

A pair of senior twins, Maddi and Merri Luczak, is expected to play big roles as right side hitter and setter.

“Maddi is a good blocker and is very smart,” said Butler. “Merri is a strong setter. Both of them will compliment this team very well.”

Kauri Tye, who also plays basketball, is expected to provide strong leadership to the floor and is a solid overall player. Lauren Merrell, the last of the sextet of seniors, will also see time as a right side hitter and “is a solid all-around player,” said Butler.

One junior to keep an eye on during the season will be Emily Madsen. She will play as an outside hitter and will be another strong piece that will make up a balanced squad.

“The one thing that stands out on this team is chemistry,” said Butler. “No one really stands out as a clear cut leader, so having good team chemistry is a big deal.”

Butler also said she expects some sophomores to play on the varsity line from time to time, but is really looking forward to playing teams in Region 1.

“It’s always good to have those visible rivalries in the region,” she said. “Davis always fields a great team and they have great composure as a unit. The entire region is strong from top to bottom, and will be tough to go through.”

Butler is taking over the head coaching duties for this season only. The team’s regular coach, Melissa Brewer, had a baby recently and will take the season off.
