In a March 18, 2010 article in the Clipper, local legislators described the recent legislative session as “phenomenal.” I disagree. Utah spends less money for every student than any other state and has the largest class sizes in the nation. In the recent legislative session the Legislature cut education funding by $10 million. At the same time, they passed a bill that attempts to seize federal lands in Southern Utah. They estimate that the state will spend $3 million to defend this law even though no one believes it has a chance of succeeding. To top it off, the funding will come from — you guessed it — the state education trust fund. As a public school student, that doesn’t sound so “phenomenal” to me.
