BOUNTIFUL — Bountiful letter carrier Kelly Taylor has driven to the moon and back two times, so to speak.

Taylor has driven one million miles, all accident free, in his 30-plus years with the Bountiful Post Office.

To recognize the milestone, the National Safety Council awarded Taylor its Million Mile Safe Driving Award last month. He received a lapel pin and plaque from the council and Bountiful postal employees feted Taylor with their own celebration. Receiving the award requires 30 years of service and a safe attitude, according to a United States Post Office press release.

“It’s quite an achievement,” said Taylor’s boss Bountiful Postmaster Mike Carey. “It’s a high honor.”

Taylor has worked at the Bountiful Post Office since June of 1982, Carey said. His primary route is to businesses and homes in and around The Square at 2600.

Taylor offered his insights to the Post Office for safe driving practices:

 Drive defensively. Expect the unexpected.

Maintain a safe distance of one car length for every 10 miles between you and the car in front of you.

Be courteous, use turn signals and obey all laws.

Keep your options open. Have a “What do I do if I’m cut off” strategy.

Tips for safe driving:

• Drive defensively.

• Maintain a safe distance between you and the driver in front of you.

• Use turn signals and obey all traffic laws.

• Turn off mobile devices while driving.

Turn off mobile devices while driving.

The nation’s 31,000-plus Post Offices are linked by nearly 214,000 vehicles, the world’s largest civilian fleet, according to the release. Nearly 300,000 letter carriers and drivers log more than 1.2 billion miles annually when delivering to more than 150 million addresses.
