Letter: Motorcyclists shouldn’t be harassed

The purpose of my letter is to respectfully rebute the letter to the editor published on April 25, 2013 by Connor Jensen, and I would like to address my rebuttal to Mr. Jensen and all mountain bikers.

There are two trails up Mueller Park Canyon, the Kenny Creek Trail and the North Canyon Trail, and motorcycles are not allowed on the Kenny Creek Trail, only hikers, horses and mountain bikes.

The North Canyon Trail from Mueller Park to North Canyon was a trail built and funded by Dirt Bikes in the 1970s, and motorcyclists have every right to lawfully continually use it, as do horsemen, hikers and mountain bikers.

Mountain bikers have continually harassed motorcycle riders including myself and my brother.  Even worse, uniformed Bountiful police officers including my father, retired Bountiful Police Sgt. Roger Green, have been harassed on duty in the past, up that trail by mountain bikers who think they can have authority to harass motorcycle riders (including on duty cops) on that trail.

It is unacceptable.  My brother and I, in 2004, were on that trail and we had two mountain bikers block our way on purpose. I called Bountiful Police Department from my cell phone and they took off, only to meet a now-retired sergeant at the bottom of the trail on the Mueller Park side. He took them to the sign on the other side of the bridge and educated them on the legality of motorcyclists using the trail. He also asked them what authority they had to block motorcyclists and they had no comment to him, and they nearly were cited for disorderly conduct.

Bountiful police are fully aware of the legality of motorcycles on that trail and I hope the Davis County Sheriff’s Office is.  My dad was up there off duty numerous years ago, on his personal dirt bike, and was harassed by a former Davis deputy for being on the trail. He took his helmet off and she shockingly recognized him as a fellow police officer, and he educated her on the law.

To Connor Jenson and all mountain bikers, if you don’t like running into motorcycle riders, then you need to stay off the North Canyon Trail. Dirt bikes will continue to be allowed to use that trail and I am sure Chief Tom Ross and his great police staff will continue to keep the peace on their motorcycle (dirt bike) patrols of that trail this summer.

Cory Green,
