Letters: Help with deer problem in Woods Cross

Editor,

There is a family of deer, a buck, a female and a teenager, that apparently live and hide in an overgrown vacant lot at 800 West and 2000 South in Woods Cross, next to an LDS Church.

These animals seem to have very refined palates, as they seem to love the roses in my yard. They do not break branches but very delicately pluck the tender buds. They also seem to be very enthusiastic with day lilies and the tender sprouts of raspberry bush leaves.

They come at all times, day or night, and on hot afternoons I have found them sitting С in a sybaritic attitude С under the cooling shade of my maple tree. They must be descendants of a high-end clan.

I love animals, especially deer, but in their own habitat, not mine. Because of this I am trying to get some help.

I called the Wildlife Resources Division and their best customer service representative explained that they could do nothing about it and were especially nice to inform me that I can find in the market several brands of deer deterrent. They were particularly helpful in advising me that I shouldn’t rely on them because they are not 100 percent effective.

I feel very sorry seeing my flowers being devoured, but feel even worse as I fear that any day now, some gourmet without my sensibility, but with epicurean inclinations for venison steaks, might have different ideas.

Is it possible that there is no county, state or federal agency that can help? It shouldn’t be very difficult to use tranquilizer darts to put them to sleep and take them back to the mountains. It is done all the time for different purposes in different parts of the world and within the USA.

But my main concern is the fact that every time these creatures get scared, they cross and race along 800 West, sometimes on the sidewalk. At any moment we will have a bad accident on our hands.

Can someone help, not just me but the Woods Cross community with this issue? We will appreciate it.

Sincerely,

Carlos Woodyatt

Woods Cross
