It’s “Hometown Boy” vs. one of the most influential senators in the nation.

That’s the scenario that has played out for Bountiful’s Dan Liljenquist, who garnered just above 40 percent of the vote in Saturday’s State Republican Convention to force a primary vote against Utah’s senior senator, Orrin Hatch, on June 26.

“I am pleased with the race we ran,” Liljenquist said. “As we talked to delegates, our message of fiscal discipline and bold, innovative ideas resonated with them.

“After weeks of hearing this race was over, I think it’s clear the momentum is on our side,” he said. “Just three weeks ago, polls put us at a mere 16 percent among delegates. (Now) 40 percent of those delegates said they are ready for change in Washington. We are excited to take our message to the voters of Utah.”
