BOUNTIFUL – The past three months have been good ones for one local Amateur Athletic Union boys’ basketball team.

The Utah Hustle ninth grade Red Team, based in Davis County, has won three straight basketball tournaments in the past three months, making the team’s run one of the strongest in recent history. 

Chad Rawlings, President, Founder and head coach for the team, sent the team to three tournaments in as many months. Each tournament ending with a Hustle victory.

The first of the trio of tournaments occurred in September and was called the Utah AAU Fall Opener Tournament. They went unbeaten in that tournament to claim the championship before moving onto Halloween Tournament in October. 

In the Halloween tournament, the Hustle suffered through only a single loss but still managed to capture the championship after the weekend’s games.

The Hustle continued its winning streak with a championship effort in this past weekend’s Utah AAU Thanksgiving Day Tournament, where the team finished 4-0 and held their opponents to an average of only 26.5 points per game. 

In the championship game against Syracuse, the Hustle allowed only 25 points while claiming the championship trophy.

Many of the players on the Hustle’s roster this season either will play for or have been playing for Davis County high schools. Among them are Dallin Watts, Boston Armistead and Chandler Obray for Layton High School; Landon Swartz for Davis High School; Josh Perkins, Cole Huish and Jack Fox for Viewmont High School; and Jonny Schmidt, Chris Schmidt, Landon Trusty and Nate Carlson for Bountiful High School.

Trusty did not play in the team’s most recent tournament due to being called to play on Bountiful’s Junior Varsity team.

Overall, the team suffered only one loss and “played tremendous basketball” through all three tournaments, said Rawlings.
