BOUNTIFUL — They won!
The five young singers from Bountiful, all daughters of Linsey and Lamar Holley, earned the most Facebook votes for their Honeycomb cereal jingle, taking the top prize in an online contest.
“Cutest jingle ever,” said one comment on the Honeycomb Facebook site.
In the 51-second jingle, the blond vocalists go from the kitchen table to the piano that has a “Family” plaque on display, to their yard and back, singing about Honeycomb’s big taste. To meet the entry requirement of having someone over 13 in the video, their dad Lamar makes a brief appearance at the end.
“I don’t even know you and I’m totally excited,” said another who commented on Facebook.
“Can we get the girls’ autographs before they move to Hollywood?” said another writer.
“This is a huge miracle in our lives,” wrote Linsey Holley, their mother, in a post on the site.
She thanked Honeycomb for the opportunity and their many Facebook fans for voting, then added.,“You have no idea what a huge blessing this is to us right now. Thank you all so much.”
She also thanked the Clipper and its readers for their support.
The winning entry was to be announced on Oct. 23 so family members stayed up late Monday, hoping it would happen right at midnight. When there was no announcement, they kept checking all night.
“It was hard to sleep. It felt like Christmas,” said Phebe, 11.
“Then this morning, there it was,” said Linsey on Tuesday. “There was screaming, screaming, screaming Р all of us. I started crying and my girls were like, ‘why are you crying,’ and I told them they were happy tears,” she said.
Violet, 7, started doing headstands and June, 5, wanted to call all the friends who voted for them to let them know.
“When we found out we won we were just all screaming, even the baby started screaming with us,” said 9-year-old Anna Belle.
In the weeks leading up to the announcement, the Holley family discussed fun ways to spend the $5,000 prize money, should they win it.
The ideas ranged from going to Disneyland to building up their savings, but all agreed it would be best spent if used as a down payment on a new house.
“We’ve been renting for 13 years and my kids have had to switch schools six different times,” said Linsey. “We’re sick of moving.”
The house they are in now had problems with mold and flooding, as did the last home they rented, she said.
“When it happened again I thought, ‘Why is this happening to us again?’” she said. “It was a strange turn of events but us winning this is the only chance we’ll ever have to have a down payment for a house.”
The Holleys found their dream home in their price range, she said, which she called another miracle. She added that it will take yet another miracle to get it because there is another offer on it now.
Besides the prize money, there may be other opportunities as well. Linsey said she couldn’t remember reading all the fine-print when they submitted their video, but there may be something about performing with the band We the Kings.
It was that group that selected the four finalists at the start of the contest. Voting to narrow the four to two and then the two finalists to one winner was open to the public, and entirely online via Facebook.
Harmonizing is something that comes easily to her daughters, said Linsey.
Her husband, Lamar, teaches at Salt Lake Arts Academy and has a “musical brain,” she said. “Luckily, most of my girls have got it too,” she said.
“I had never edited a music video and felt really lucky getting the music and the picture to sync up,” said Lamar.
“I loved Honeycomb from day one of this contest because it brought my family together doing something we love; something creative,” he said.
