BOUNTIFUL – Before high school basketball players can even get a taste of the Christmas season, the holiday is gone and they’re back on the basketball court.
Utah high school basketball teams around the State will play basketball games starting Thursday morning and running all the way through the weekend.
A pair of local Region 1 teams will head to in-state and out-of-state tournaments.
Davis and Layton high schools will be playing in the Energy Classic (held in Evanston, Wyo.) and the Jordan Holiday Classic (held at Juan Diego and Jordan High Schools), respectively, starting as early as Thursday morning.
The Darts, who are undefeated at 6-0, will make the trip to Wyoming. As the lone Utah high school team, they will face high schools from Washington, Wyoming, North Dakota, Nevada and Oregon.
The tournament itself started in 1998, and has typically hosted as many as 16 boys’ and girls’ basketball teams from the western United States and Canada.
Davis’ first game will be against Battle Ground High School from Vancouver, Wash. on Thursday at 10:15 a.m. Its’ second round game will be against either Century High School (from Bismarck, N.D.) or Natrona County High School (from Casper, Wyo.) and will be played on Friday.
The Layton Lancers, who have dropped three of their last four games, will take part in a tournament inside Utah borders. They travel to Juan Diego High School for the fifth annual Jordan Holiday Tournament.
Layton’s first opponent will be Skyline High School in a game on Thursday night at 5:15 p.m. Should they advance, they will likely play the remainder of the tournament at Jordan High School.
The tournament will run through New Year’s Eve, according to Jordan High School’s basketball website.
Rounding out local basketball teams playing this week is Woods Cross, which will host Mountain Crest on Saturday at 4:30 p.m.
The Wildcats, who are 6-2 and have won five of its last six games, last played against Box Elder on Friday, Dec. 21.
Woods Cross’ home game will be the first of five consecutive games where the Wildcats will play host.
Tirls’ basketball players from Bountiful, Davis and Viewmont are scheduled to play on Saturday.
The day will start with the Lady Darts hosting the Brighton Lady Bengals at Davis High at 12:45 p.m. The Darts are currently riding a three-game winning streak, and have beaten all three by at least 18 points.
The Bengals are also carrying a three-game winning streak with them to Davis, having beaten Viewmont, Kearns and Pleasant Grove.
The highlight of the day will conclude with a non-region battle between cross-town rivals Bountiful and Viewmont at 7 p.m. at Viewmont High School.
The Lady Braves have won three of their last four matches.
The Vikings have lost two of their last three games since opening the season with six straight victories.
Other local girls’ basketball games on Saturday include Layton at Bingham and Bonneville at Syracuse.
Both games are scheduled to tip off at 2:30 p.m.
