BOUNTIFUL — Lt. Gov. Greg Bell announced his resignation this morning to seek work in the private sector.

Bell, a Fruit Heights resident and former city councilman and mayor of Farmington, will stay on with Gov. Gary Herbert until the governor names a replacement.

Herbert expects to announce a replacement in the near future, a press release from his office said.

Bell was elected to the Utah Senate in 2002 for District 22, which covers central Davis County. He served as assistant majority whip in 2009 before being asked to serve as lieutenant governor.

Herbert asked Bell to fill the position after Herbert, who had served in that role for nearly seven years, became governor. It started when Gov. Jon Huntsman accepted the nomination to become U.S. ambassador to China.

“It’s difficult to leave a post as substantive and dynamic as this, and I have enjoyed every minute. It’s simply time to take care of my family’s long-term financial needs,” Bell said in the press release.

Bell previously practiced law specializing in real estate development and finance.

“I have valued Lt. Governor Bell’s loyalty as my partner and friend,” Herbert said. “He is a true statesman — a man of principle, integrity and resolve. And he has been key to our ongoing success, particularly on the education front.”

Earlier this year, Bell was part of an investigation by the Davis County Attorney’s office. It centered on allegations he had used his political position to influence a child-protection case involving a friend who was also a member of his LDS ward. In August, the county attorney said no charges would be filed.
