BOUNTIFUL – Mason Wright, a junior defensive lineman for the Viewmont Vikings football team, literally outscored the offense Friday night against the Bonneville Lakers.

Wright had an interception returned for a touchdown, and added fumble recovery in the end zone for his second touchdown, and the Vikings beat the Lakers 20-17 Friday night to open the season.

“He’s a kid that’s pretty gifted athletically and he did some great things out there,” said Vikings coach Brad Lloyd. “He gave us a huge lift defensively and had a great game.”

Wright’s first touchdown of the night came in the second quarter, returning an interception 37 yards to give Viewmont a 13-7 lead.

On the scoring play, Bonneville quarterback Kysen Hall attempted to throw a screen pass to a teammate, but his pass ended up in the hands of Wright instead.

“I saw (Hall) drop back, take a step, and turn around,” said Wright. “At that point, I knew it was going to be a screen so I dropped back and waited for the ball.”

Wright’s second score was set up by an Aaron Dalton punt to the Bonneville eight-yard-line. On the next play, Wright sacked Hall, forced the fumble, and recovered the ball for the touchdown.

The score gave Viewmont a 20-10 lead at the time.

“I was just trying to get on the quarterback,” said Wright of his second touchdown. “I was able to grab him and saw the ball come out as he was coming down, so I jumped on it.”

Viewmont’s only other touchdown came in the first quarter, a 21 yard touchdown pass from Max Hadlock to Colby Simons that gave Viewmont a 6-0 lead at the time.

“I’m very proud of what he did tonight,” said Lloyd of Hadlock’s performance. “I think our entire offense performed pretty well. They made the adjustments and Max was right there with them.”

Hadlock was 10-of-17 passing for 101 yards and one touchdown. Jared Barnum rushed for 66 yards on 16 carries, and Simons had 82 yards on five catches with his touchdown.

Tate Burt led the defense with 10 total tackles and a sack.

Viewmont will face Bountiful next week at Bountiful High School.
