BOUNTIFUL – Boys’ and girls’ basketball has hit the halfway point of the region season, and most of the teams from Davis County remain in prime position for the state 4A and 5A playoffs.
In Region 1, the Davis Darts boys’ basketball team remains on top of the standings, and is undefeated at 6-0 as of press time.
Despite a 14-1 overall record, the Darts are still ranked as the No. 4 team in the state behind Lone Peak, Bountiful and Alta.
The Darts’ only loss of the season came against the Hawks to open the season, and they have since reeled off 14 consecutive victories.
Viewmont, however, remains one game behind the Darts at 5-1, its only loss coming against Davis back on January 21.
The Vikings had a mixed preseason record with wins over Clearfield, Highland, and Riverton in its first four games. Their losses have come against ranked opponents such as Bountiful, Lone Peak and American Fork.
The Vikings lone loss in region play came against Davis, and Viewmont is in a comfortable position for at least a No. 2 seed heading into the state 5A playoffs in March.
In Region 6, Bountiful has shown why it’s still ranked as the No. 2 boys’ basketball team in the state. Bountiful was 7-0 in region play prior to Tuesday night’s game against Kearns, and still has one more game remaining against rival Woods Cross.
The Braves’ only loss of the season came against El Camino, Calif., at the Tarkanian Classic Tournament in December. They have since won 11 straight, and their opponents have scored fewer than 40 points in each of Bountiful’s last three games.
Woods Cross, at 4-3 in region play, is still in position for a playoff spot with games against Clearfield, Cyprus, East and Kearns still left on its schedule.
In girls’ basketball, both Viewmont and Davis are tied for the No. 3 seed in Region 1, holding 4-4 records each.
The Lady Vikings have shown promise recently, winning its last two games over Weber and Syracuse while also returning key players to the team.
The Lady Darts, who beat Viewmont in their first meeting have won four of their last six games in region play to climb back into playoff contention.
Layton, at 6-1, is two games clear of the Darts and Vikings, and still has a chance to take a region title away from Fremont.
The Bountiful Lady Braves have bounced back from its 2-5 preseason record to win nine straight region games. They currently hold the top spot in Region 6 with a handful of games remaining on the schedule.
Despite going winless in preseason play, the Woods Cross Lady Wildcats are in prime position for a playoff spot.
A 4-5 Region 6 mark currently has the Lady Wildcats in the fourth and final seed in the region. The Lady Wildcats still have games remaining against Clearfield and Cyprus, two teams Woods Cross has beaten this season.
