BOUNTIFUL — Last Thursday at about 11 a.m., a Bountiful woman walked to her window and to her astonishment, a young moose was standing just a few feet away.

“There he was, scared to death,” said Tracey Willey, who lives near Granada Circle, at about 1300 East and 200 South. “He was just out in my yard wandering around.”

The woman called the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources, and watched the yearling bull for a few hours until officers arrived, shooting video and photos from her cell phone all the while.

The officer tranquilized the majestic animal, abd then it took five of them to move the moose to a large tarp and heft him to a trailer, where they gave him water.

Next, the moose was taken to the Price area and released.

Later, wildlife division officials said yearling bulls wander this time of year.

“Where it was a yearling bull, they get pushed off their mothers when their mothers have new calves, which is the first part of the summer,” said Jodie Anderson, spokesperson for Utah’s northern region office. “You have them wandering through town when they do, we will tranquilize and relocate them up into the mountains so they don’t wander into town.”

Willey said its common for her to see wild animals in her yard, but this is her first moose.

“I’ve seen them way up in the mountains and that, but never down this far,” she said. “I get deer all the time, so this was what was just crazy.”

See a video of the moose here.

If you see a wild animal in town, call the division at 801-476-2740 or call 911, Anderson said.
