New Smith’s opens at former Kmart property

WOODS CROSS—Less than a year after the old Kmart building was razed, a new Smith’s Food & Drug Store opened its doors Wednesday, Nov. 9, in the Woods Crossing development on 2600 South.

“It’s kind of a unique hybrid between the traditional Smith’s and a Smith’s Marketplace,” said Marsha Gilford, vice president public affairs for Smith’s. “We have an expanded assortment of departments here. When you walk in it feels fresh with beautiful food and flowers. There is also an expanded organic and natural foods section. We buy as much locally grown produce as we can.”

The 103,000 square-foot store replaces the Smith’s at 2399 South Main in Bountiful. That store closed Nov. 8 and current managers and employees moved over to the new store along with an additional 100 people who were hired to meet the needs of the larger facility.

“This is going to be a hot spot for the (WX) high school students,” said Gilford. “We offer a huge eating area and our deli is incredible. I’d put our gourmet pizza up against anybody’s. We have a side door so if you just want to eat, you can buzz in and buzz out without going through the store.”

Steven Larson, a Utah artist, was commissioned to paint a mural of Woods Cross and Bountiful that portrays the historic heritage of the area. It hangs in the food court for customers to enjoy while they eat.

In addition to pizza, shoppers can get coffee at the in-store Starbucks, gourmet sandwiches, and fresh sushi or sample the salad bar. 

“We have an extensive cheese island with imported cheeses and gourmet cheeses,” said Gilford. “In the bakery we have artesian breads that are just delicious. We also have fresh meat and seafood.”

Unlike the regular Smith’s store, patrons will find a large kitchen supply area featuring dinnerware and small appliances. “It’s a fun place to get lost in,” she said. “Our skylights get enough light during the day that we can turn the lights off inside and save energy. We use LED lights throughout the store with motion sensors and lots of energy saving heating and cooling systems. It’s an important part of what we do.”

Gilford said there has been a growing movement for organic and natural foods. “People want more variety,” she said. “Our product selection is continuing to grow in all food categories.” 

A new Kroger label, Simply Truth identifies 101 ingredients in organic and natural foods that people don’t want. The products are easily identified by a green dot on the packaging. 

For the busy shopper, Smith’s has incorporated ClickList, an online service where customers can place their grocery order online then pick it up curbside without even going in the store.

“It’s a life changer for so many people,” said Gilford. “You can go online or use the mobile app. Shoppers can keep the order open for a week and just keep adding to it. Then when they’re ready, they submit the order and it’s ready the next day. An employee meets you at the curb with your groceries and away you go.”

The first three orders are free then it is $4.95 for each order after that. 

Gilford said it’s especially convenient for people with aging parents or those who are disabled or home bound.

“Customers always get the best price available,” she said. “We’ll always give you the lower price. If the item is not in stock, we go up to a better product without charging extra. We want customers to be happy using ClickList.”

Smith’s has given back to the community by donating $4,000 to the Family Connection Center, $2,500 to sponsor Bountiful High School’s anti-bullying campaign, $250 to the Woods Cross band, who performed at the grand opening. Another $30,000 collected through the check stand from Utah customers was given to the USO to support the military. 

“It’s a super exciting time,” said Gilford. “This has taken a lot of work to make this happen.”
