KAYSVILLE - In discussion over extending the deadline on the purchase of city-owned land at Flint and 200 North, city leaders indicated Smith’s Food and Drug is considering a store on the spot.

The grocery chain would be an anchor tenant for the development, which is currently in the planning stages. Terra Basin, LLC, has been exploring development on the site and has requested several extensions on the purchase agreement as they work to line up tenants.

In their meeting on Tuesday, Dec. 17, city council members voted to amend the purchase and sale agreement with Terra Basin, giving them until Feb. 28 to finalize their decision on the land purchase.

The extension will allow Smith’s, a division of Kroger Co., to get corporate approval, according to Mayor Steve Hiatt. Council member Gil Miller said the company has been “diligent about their due diligence,” but expressed confidence that they will build on the site.

“We are very excited about our prospect to grow our presence through this new store,” said Marsha Gilford, public relations vice president for Smith’s, confirming the store is planned.

“We will continue to work through the processes to work together to build a stronger presence in the Kaysville and Layton area,” she said.

No time line for a groundbreaking or other details have been determined, Gilford added.
