SALT LAKE CITY — Before taking on the world, one band wants to say thank you to the hometown crowd.
New City Skyline, made up of Centerville natives Paul Rampton, Devan Brown, Andrew Pemberton and Chance Hutchinson, will be releasing their debut album Oct. 16. They’re holding a special pre-release concert just for Utah audiences on Oct. 13 at 7 p.m. at The Complex in Salt Lake, where audience members can purchase advance copies of the album. Garrett Bishop, a fellow Centerville native, will open for the group.
“Fans around here are just great to us,” said Paul Rampton, the group’s lead singer. “We really wanted to acknowledge that.”
Rampton grew up with Brown and Hutchinson, and the three started their first band at Centerville Jr. High. They added Pemberton to the group around the time the four graduated from Viewmont High School, deciding that music was their future instead of college.
“We turned down scholarship opportunities,” Rampton said. “We decided we wanted to take our music seriously, and went out to Las Vegas.”
The group has been touring the last five years, working on their sound and gradually growing the size of the venues they played at.
“For the past two to three years, we’ve been able to headline 1,000-seaters,” Rampton said. “We’re known for putting on a great show, but it was time to take it to the next level.”
During that time, the band was writing the songs that would appear on the album, titled “On My Own.”
“I think a debut album is really a collection of a band’s greatest hits up to that point,” said Rampton.
Not that he can pick which of those “greatest hits” he likes best.
“They’re like my children,” he said. “I have to go with the diplomatic answer and say they’re all my favorite.”
