FARMINGTON — Davis School Board members toured the school district from one end to the other, visiting new schools, viewing potential school sites, and touring additions and improvements at existing schools.
Traveling without air conditioning in a yellow school bus, board members and district officials began in the colorful halls of the first phase of the new Vista Learning Center in Farmington.
Their tour took them past two sites in Woods Cross for potential elementary schools to two high schools that are getting new turf of their sports fields.
They also visited Syracuse Elementary, where Chinese immersion students addressed them in the second language they are learning.
Syracuse, a year-round school, is getting a new cafeteria and multi-purpose room. The multi-year project will turn the old cafeteria into a media center and the old media center into classrooms.
High schools getting new turf are Clearfield and Davis.
Besides Vista, the board toured Wasatch Elementary, which is being built near the site of the old elementary in Clearfield and will include a community center.
“There is a lot going on,” said Gary Payne, administrator of facilities for the district.
The district now includes 59 elementary schools, with the 60th in the drawing stages, according to Payne. In addition, there are 16 junior highs, eight high schools and smaller specialty schools including Mountain High and Davis Junior High. Vista Education Campus is built to accomodate post high school special education students.
Other improvements are underway at Sunset Elementary, which is also getting a new media center and office area, a move that has allowed the school to reclaim four classrooms and remove most of its portables.
