BOUNTIFUL — Approving the purchase of new power poles may not excite very many Bountiful residents – until  there aren’t enough poles to go around.          Hoping to avoid possibly running out of poles, the Bountiful City Council approved purchase of 98 power poles for $62,559. The single bid was supplied by McFarland Cascade.

Bids were requested of two other firms but McFarland Cascade is the only one that builds a specific type of  wooden pole required by the city,  said Power Department Director Allen Johnson.

Bid specifications require they should be Western red or yellow cedar and “butt-treated.” The butt-treated poles are used because they hold up well to weather and conditions in the area. They’re also safer to climb for linemen, he told the council last week.
