WOODS CROSS — Woods Cross residents will likely see no tax increase in the 2013-14 fiscal year budget.

The only increase they will see will be a $4 per month hike in water rates to pay for a treatment facility to clean the city’s contaminated water.

The Woods Cross city council approved a nearly $5 million tentative budget for the 2013-14 fiscal year Tuesday night, which includes a 5 percent increase in medical insurance premiums for city employees and a proposed 2 percent salary increase.

A public hearing will be held June 4 at 7 p.m. on the tentative budget. The final budget is expected to be approved in the city council meeting two weeks later.

The council will hold a work session before the June 4 hearing, to iron out some of the specifics.

Councilmembers heard from department heads Tuesday night who presented their requests for a budget described as tight by city manager Gary Uresk.

The proposed budget is $244,000 more than last year, bringing it up to $4.928,000.

The only area to see a major increase is in the parks fund, which saw a $312,000 increase for a new park on the west side.

The Police Department is losing $62,400, taking the funds from across the board, affecting everything from overtime and officer training to office supplies.

“Everybody else (other south Davis police agencies) is seeing expansion. We’re the only south Davis agency to reduce its budget,” Woods Cross Police Chief Greg Butler said.

“We’re doing a lot with a little,” he said.

Uresk said the economy was sluggish in 2013, vbcause sales tax revenue leveled off. Property tax revenue was slightly higher than last year since growth has been limited.

“The position we’ve taken is very conservative,” Uresk said. “As the year goes by, if it gets better, then we can make adjustments,” he said.
