BOUNTIFUL — A new running program being kick-started by a Utah group is looking for girls to sign up for its 12-week training program, beginning March 4.

The program is called Girls on the Run, and is organized by a non-profit organization that started in 1996. Since then, the program has reached some 43 states and has had a chapter in Salt Lake City since 2007, according to a press release sent to the Clipper.

Due to its most recent success, the program has expanded to include schools in Davis County, and will be looking for youth runners to sign up for the program. The program is looking for coaches as well.

“There are several ways you can get involved,” said Heidi Moreton, Executive Director.  “If you have a daughter, make sure her school is enrolled in the program. If you enjoy working with girls, like running or just want to get in shape yourself, sign up to be a team coach or a running buddy for a single girl.”

The soft deadline to sign up is Friday, March 1. However, applications will be accepted through the first day of the 12-week training program, said Moreton. After the program is completed, runners will take part in a 5K run that will be held in Sugar House Park on Saturday, June 1 at 9 a.m. There is no fee for signing up for the program.
