NORTH SALT LAKE — Taxing agencies all over the county are working to bring dozens of new jobs to North Salt Lake.

City officials approved an economic development agreement that would offer taxing incentives designed to encourage Orbit Irrigation to expand its North Salt Lake factory to accommodate a new line of products. The company is still debating whether to expand its factory here or move operations for the new line to Asia.

“We want to help them afford to be able to do it here rather than in China,” said Mayor Len Arave.

The company is trying to choose a home for its new product line, which would feature pipes and fittings that would snap together by hand instead of requiring tools. Orbit officials estimate that the product line would include the hiring of 60 more employees.

The economic development agreement was approved by both North Salt Lake and a Taxing Entity Committee made up of various Davis County agencies. If Orbit chooses to enter into a partnership with North Salt Lake and accept the agreement, new property tax generated by the expansion for the next 20 years would be diverted and likely used to help the development. Property taxes on the existing building would be distributed normally. Twenty years is the maximum legal time frame, said North Salt Lake Community development director Ken Leetham.

Orbit also has factories in Shangai, Nigbo and Taiwan, all of which offer lower prices for building and construction.

If Orbit does choose to move operations for the new product line to Asia, the plant would remain in North Salt Lake and the economic development agreement would be made null and void, as would a tax incentive from the Utah Governor’s Office of Economic Development, first offered in December of 2012.
