SALT LAKE CITY – The Outdoor Retailer Summer Market, which started in Ogden and ended in Salt Lake City on Saturday, started with a flourish and ended with a bang.

The Summer Market showcased hundreds of products from all over the world, and offerings ranged from clothing brands to fishing items and other outdoor gear.

“We like to see people come and be interested in what we’re doing,” said Hutch Hutchinson, a representative for Orvis, a fly fishing company. “That’s why we’re all here. We want to educate people, show other retailers what we can offer them and hopefully see what can be shown in their shops.”

The event is a trade show for shops that sell gear for outdoor adventures. Held primarily at the Salt Palace, its twice-annual event is among the biggest shows in the state.

This year, it drew so many exhibitors that several were pushed to tents on the sidewalk.

Hutchinson, who did a “How-to” on fly fishing during Thursday’s activities, said retailers from everywhere have shown interest in expanding their customer base “by offering more than just what they have available.”

“Fly fishing can be fairly economical,” he said. “It’s more accessible and more affordable than people think, and that’s another reason we’re here. We want to change the minds of regular people who think this is an expensive hobby.”

The “Fly Fishing Zone” was one of the many areas offering how-to clinics. In an adjoining area was another pool featuring a how-to clinic about performing yoga on a long board. 

Other vendors showcased items for rock climbing, and the event included a rock climbing wall and a groundbreaking climbing competition. More items included clothing apparel and shoes, camping gear such as tents, backpacks, and water sporting equipment for humans and dogs alike. 

Hutchinson’s company was at both the Ogden and Salt Lake City locations, and said that being at Pineview Reservoir on “Day Zero” was just as important as the rest of the week.

“What better opportunity did we have than to show people what fly-fishing can do for them,” he said. “It was a great site and we were at a great location there; that day was amazing for us.”

Orvis was one of the seven demonstrations offered throughout the week. Last Thursday’s fly fishing demonstration also had other demo’s ranging from running, hiking, camping, and navigation to truck and rig parking.

Technology also made its way into the week’s demonstrations. Companies ranging from Minelab and Sony Electronics to JVC made appearances.

“It’s great to be here,” said Hutchinson. “For us, it gives us the chance to show what can be available and how our sport can be used by the masses. Utah is one of the best states for this kind of event too.”
