CENTERVILLE - The latest phone scam may be winding down, but law enforcement is encouraging everyone to be vigilant about the calls they accept, because another scam is waiting right around the corner.

Residents across Utah received calls last week from a 473 area code and those who answered or called back faced excessive fees from their cell phone carriers.

Even the police weren’t immune.

Centerville Police Lt. Paul Child received one of the calls, so did the police chief and some of the department’s officers.

“Then we started hearing from citizens,” Child said.

The department tweeted an alert on the evening of Jan 1., right after they began hearing from residents.

The caller sounded like a person in distress.

“We had one resident who was called at 2 a.m., who told us it sounded like a person moaning,” Child said. That report is similar to others received by state investigators.

The number, 473-520-9734 is assigned to the island country of Grenada.

Child said residents who get calls from a 473 number, or from any other number they don’t recognize shouldnot answer the call.

“Let it go to your voicemail, listen to it and then make a determination  as to whether you want to return the call,” Child said. “We need to be ultra careful about these sorts of things.”

Most of the calls were made to Verizon customers, but those with other cell phone carriers are not immune.

The state Department of Public Safety warned in a press release that the scam expects those called to call back. Information can then be captured from your phone resulting in charges.
