LAYTON – Police will resume their search at first light Friday morning for a man who may have drowned at Holmes Creek Reservoir.
According to Layton Police Lt. Shawn Horton, search divers were in the water for 3-4 hours trying to find the man before temporarily calling off the search at 8 p.m. due to fading light. The man, a 20-year-old Layton resident whose name is being withheld at the request of his parents, was swimming at the reservoir with friends when he went under the water.
“They were swimming across the reservoir from east to west, and at one point the 20-year-old told his female friend that he didn’t think he was doing to make it across,” said Horton.
He said that police first got the 911 call at approximately 4:30 p.m. Thursday afternoon. Witnesses said that a 19-year-old male friend tried to help the 20-year-old first, then called to the 18-year-old female friend to assist. A man and his son walking on the shore also entered the water in order to help pull the 20-year-old man out of the water. None of the attempts were successful, though all four made it to shore safely.
The reservoir is located at 2650 East Gentile St. in Layton. Check back with the Clipper for further developments.
