HILL AFB — “There are still a lot of unanswered questions” as the organizational structure at Hill Air Force Base changes to a “complex,” Rep. Rob Bishop, R-Utah, said Tuesday.

He was referring to the change in designation of the Ogden Air Logistics Center (Hill AFB) to a complex that is now part of the Air Force Sustainment Center (AFSC).

So far, 159 jobs have been lost, including some “layers of management.”

The move has been touted by the Obama administration as a way to save money.

The re-designation as an air logistics complex is part of an Air Force Materiel Command (AFMC) effort aimed at reducing the command’s centers from 12 to five.

The effort was announced last November and is expected to save about $109 million annually.

“This is a flow chart of authority. I don’t know how it saves money,” said Bishop, who was the only member of Utah’s congressional delegation to attend ceremonies effecting the change July 12.

Bishop’s being there was a way to “tell (the command) directly that we’re going to be watching them,” he said.

But the Kaysville native added, “We want them to be successful. They have an awesome responsibility to make sure this new system works.”

“Hill AFB and its people will continue to be critical to AFMC achieving its mission of providing war fighter support,” said Gen. Janet Wolfenbarger, AFMC commander, who officiated at last week’s event.”

“The work done here is important not only to the AFMC mission, but to the greater Air Force mission as well,” he said.
