ions are being taken now for the 2012 Davis County Gala.
It promises to be a “Wild” time, in keeping with this year’s theme, featuring food, entertainment and a time to support a good cause and honor outstanding community volunteers. The gala is set for Thursday, Sept. 6.
“It’s fun! It’s the event of the year,” exuded gala chair Valerie Davis of the annual black tie and formal attire event.
“This year we’re going to take a trip to Africa,” she said, speaking of the decor that will transform the Davis Conference Center main ballroom.
The Conference Center will be transformed into a hidden tropical village with vines, palms, bamboo and other jungle elements.
Chloe’s Sunshine Playground will be the charity receiving funds from the event. It will be built in downtown Syracuse in a partnership with the city as a place where children with a variety of disabilities can play and mingle with other children, rather than sitting on the sidelines as they usually do at a traditional park, she explained.
“It’s an unusual park. There aren’t very many like it across the U.S. It’s nice we can help make this happen, bring other people into our community,” Davis said.
A visiting 30-member African Children’s Choir, ages 7-12, will provide entertainment.
“Us having them perform gives them an opportunity to receive an education.” she said. “This is their payback for the sponsorship. They only perform for just a few months of the year because they attend school.”
Many choir members are orphans and deal with other situations that would make it difficult, if not impossible, to gain an education otherwise, Davis said.
