BOUNTIFUL — The latest realignment meeting by the Utah High School Activities Association will result in a lot of movement from schools to different classes and regions.
However, two local high schools could benefit from it. Initial plans have rivals Davis and Viewmont back together in 5A’s Region 1.
Davis and Viewmont, which were in Region 1 together for many years, but were split apart after the last realignment placed the Vikings in Region 2. They have been there since the fall of 2011.
Since then, the Vikings have taken advantage of the move by claiming numerous region titles, while placing highly in state competitions during the past year-plus of competition.
In 2011 the Vikings С in the same region as Kearns, Taylorsville, Hunter, West and Granger high schools С claimed a region title in football, girls’ soccer, boys’ basketball, softball, boys’ soccer, and a number of other sports.
The girls’ soccer team went undefeated in Region 2 for the second consecutive season this year, and finished the 5A tournament as state champions.
Davis has had its own run of success in that time as well, claiming a volleyball crown in 2011 and a semi-final appearance this year. The baseball team also won a region title along with girls’ soccer, boys’ soccer, and other sports.
The rivalry, however, was the biggest thing missing for most fans in the Viewmont and Davis cheering communities, a fact that has been stated several times by coaches since the two team’s separated regions.
While both schools attempted to maintain the rivalry by scheduling each other in many sports, it wasn’t the same as competing against each other twice in every sport, every year.
This Fall, the girls’ soccer teams ended up not facing each other due to scheduling difficulties early in the season. The baseball teams didn’t play each other in the Spring, and the two volleyball teams did not play each other this season either.
For the winter sports this year, only the girls’ basketball teams aren’t scheduled to face each other.
Region 6 will also get its share of a shake up as well, although it won’t be due to a separation of rivalries.
Bountiful and Woods Cross, which have been in the same region together for many years, will stay together in Region 6 once again. They will be accompanied by the same four schools (Cyprus, Clearfield, Highland and East), plus newcomer Kearns, should the UHSAA Board of Trustees approve the final map.
Kearns has been competing in 5A’s Region 2 for the past two seasons, and before then was in Region 3. According to information sent to the Clipper, Kearns’ drop is likely due to its number of juniors and seniors enrolled, which currently stands at 1007.
Viewmont’s region will almost certainly get an extreme makeover to begin the 2013 school year if the regions are approved. In addition to the Vikings’ move back to Region 1, Taylorsville and Hunter will move from Region 2 to Region 3, leaving Granger and West as the only two schools not to move regions.
Other than the Vikings’ move back to Region 1, the rest of the region will remain the same. It will be the only region in 5A to have seven schools.
