CENTERVILLE—Libby Jacobsen’s sixth grade students have been studying city-states in Greece.
And with the study of Greece this year has come an added awareness of international issues, including the plight of refugees fleeing unrest and bloodshed in their own countries — a journey which often has taken them through Greece.
That is one of the reasons Emerald, one of Jacobsen’s 29 students, suggested her classmates gather gifts for refugees, and one of the reasons they purchased books and toys and clothing for refugee children in Utah.
Maura talked with her parents about refugees, and knows some have come from very difficult circumstances and especially need our support.
Patrick thought of his favorite game and his family purchased the same one for a refugee child living in Salt Lake City.
Abby’s dad was a refugee from Vietnam and “never got things like this,” she said. Liza wanted to give something really meaningful, and with her family, purchased a favorite book.
Tyson was prepared to use money he had saved by mowing lawns to purchase his gift.
Each in the classroom hoped their gifts would make a difference.
Jacobsen had challenged her class to think of a service project they could complete in December.
Emerald wrote an essay on her reasons for supporting refugees.
“I thought that if I were to have to leave my home against my will, I would need the help from foreigners, here to help me, someone they did not even know,” she wrote. “And I would be grateful to these people.”
“It seems to be that when you do something for somebody struggling, their struggles seem more real,” she wrote, “like they’re actually happening, and so it helps you to think of better ways to help.”
