WOODS CROSS – Boys’ and girls’ basketball may only be hitting the halfway point of the region schedule, but other winter sports are starting to wrap up this week.
This weekend, a series of region and state competitions will be happening across the state, starting with the 4A and 5A drill competition.
On Friday, Jan. 31, the State 4A and 5A drill team competitions will begin at Utah Valley University, and will see Region 6 champions Bountiful once again get into the mix with Hillcrest, the Mandonelles top challenger for the past five years.
Last year the Mandonelles took first place in two out of three categories, the first time they didn’t sweep all three categories since starting its current streak of state titles.
Bountiful will be gunning for a sixth straight state 4A title when they hit the floor of the UCCU Center in Orem.
Also taking place Friday and Saturday will be the Region 1 and Region 6 swimming championships at the South Davis Recreation Center in Bountiful.
Viewmont, led by a pair of twins in Mariah and McKenna Gassaway, will be looking to capture a region title under coach Steve Doman.
Doman also coaches the Woods Cross swim team, which saw the girls’ nearly capture a state title a few years ago.
Woods Cross placed fourth in the State 4A competition last season.
In wrestling, both the Darts and Vikings will be preparing for next week’s Divisional State Qualifier tournament.
In Region 6, the Braves and Wildcats will be wrestling for a region title at Cyprus High School starting Friday.
Both will likely be gunning to knock off Clearfield, which won the Region 6 title last season and finished 12th at the 4A tournament behind the Bountiful Braves.
The region tournament will finish on Saturday with championship matches.
