NORTH SALT LAKE — Eleven people were evacuated from a four-unit apartment building Sunday evening after a fire broke out in one of the units.

It was one of two fires South Davis Metro Fire Agency crews were called out on over the weekend.

Firefighters were called to the Pine Terrace apartments, 4247 S. Highway 89 at 7:02 p.m. on Sunday.

Returning home Sunday evening, the unit’s occupants detected what smelled like rubber burning, SDMFA  Chief Jeff Bassett said. The smoke detectors were going off and they could see smoke coming from the unit. Upon entering they could see the smoke coming from the basement and called 911.

“The fire had been going for quite some time,” Bassett said. “It was hot enough it melted some things on the third floor.”

Bassett said basement fires tend to be hotter than some others because the fire is confined within cement.

All four units were evacuated. The Red Cross helped seven of the occupants find housing, Bassett said.

The unit in which the fire started was a total loss. All of the units had some smoke and fire damage and some electrical problems. The complex’s management had a clean-up company on scene Sunday evening, Bassett said.

Crews took only about 10 minutes to knock down the flames, but several firefighters stayed on scene to check for any hot spots.

On Saturday afternoon fire crews were called to a car fire on Pages Lane in Centerville.

The vehicle’s owner reported he was having mechanical trouble and was trying to get it to a repair shop in Sandy when the fire occurred, Bassett said.

The man had stopped at Deseret Industries, where he noticed smoke coming from the engine that was on fire, Bassett said.

The car was a total loss, but there were no injuries.
